Katie Kirkpatrick's Story

cross posted from my tumblr:
http://charlieu.tumblr.com
I update that more than this.

The girl in the picture is Katie Kirkpatrick, she is 21. Next to her, her fiancé, Nick, 23. The picture was taken shortly before their wedding ceremony, held on January 11, 2005 in the US. Katie has terminal cancer and spend hours a day receiving medication. In the picture, Nick is waiting for her on one of the many sessions of Chemo to end.

In spite of all the pain, organ failures, and morphine shots, Katie is going along with her wedding and took care of every detail. The dress had to be adjusted a few times due to her constant weight loss.

An unusual accessory at the wedding was the oxygen tube that Katie used throughout the ceremony and reception as well. The other couple in the picture are Nick's parents. Excited to see there son marrying his high school sweetheart.

Katie, in her wheelchair with the oxygen tube, listening a song from her husband and friends.

At the reception, Katie had to take a few rest breaks. The pain wouldn't allow her to stand up for long periods.

Katie died five days after her wedding day. Watching a women so ill and weak getting married and with a smile on her face makes us think..... Happiness is reachable, no matter how long it last. We should stop making our lives complicated.

Olympics Figure Skating Comments

I love the Olympics and I've said this numerous times before, but something about the world coming together just gives me a high. One of the most highly anticipated sport during this game is figure skating (for Koreans at least) because of Kim Yuna -- the first ever athlete to compete from Korea. It's to a point where the whole country of Korea came to a standstill, where even corporate meetings were stopped, to watch to watch our top contender for gold attempt to bring it all home. You can only imagine the immense pressure Yuna was under. She broke down in tears following her final skate -- what I saw as a sign of relief and content with her performance. Needless to say as your FB status updates probably already informed you, Kim Yuna won gold while Japan's Mao Asada took silver and Joannie Rochette of Canada took bronze.

One of my favorite things to do after a huge world event like this, is to visit LJ communities and read up on their commentary. There are a lot of wicedly clever and funny people on their and their worldly knowledge jsut takes everything to the next level.  I literally spent hours going through thousands of comments, screen-capturing and editing some of my favorite ones.

Now before I show them to you, heres a little bit of some background information for you to fully understand them:
- Scott Hamilton is a retired(?) male skater and now NBC correspondent. He gives commentary during the program and gets overly enthusiastic.
- For those who don't know what the Olympic Village is, it is a seculded area that is reserved for every Olympian athlete and entourage. Gated from fans.
- The IOC released a statment that they order hundreds of thousands of condoms at every game and distributes about 14 condoms to each person in Olympic Village.
- The commentators began Rachael Flatts performance by mentioning her homeworkd.

P.S. What makes it even funnier to me is that a LOT of what they were saying on LJ were things me and the guys were saying while watching. And the constant jabs at Rachael, long after she was done, made me lol... I did stop and feel REALLY bad for her though. I had to really think if I should upload this or not cause I genuinely felt bad for the girl.

First up was Rachael Flatt of the USA...

(Christian Bale reference... lol.)

(This is the gif of her that looks like she's getting tossed: http://i46.tinypic.com/24p9zlz.jpg)

Next up was Miki Ando of Japan:

Who I was looking forward to! Kim Yuna of Korea!

Following her was her biggest rival, Japan's Mao Asada:

This is the gif in reference...

(Mao's song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMAIXM81Bbw)

Finally, Canada's Joannie Rochette, whos mother passed that week! :(

(To the fact that the announcers were eerily quiet.)

(Scott Hamilton cried after her first short program too... lol!)

After medals were awarded:

I know this is extremely image heavy, but I had no choice!!! :) These extra pictures aren't going to help either!

Dammit Mao, that is the saddest smile I've ever seen. Elyse smiles like that at Sunday school before she cries... :( You made your country proud!

And a quick lesson in psychology, silver is said to be the most psychologically hard medal to win. In a nutshell this is what goes through the mind of each medalist:

Gold: YES! GOLD!!!
Silver: I was so close to gold... *proceeds to beat them self up for every mistake and how they aren't good enough*
Bronze: YES! BRONZE!!! I GOT ONE!!!

My Goodbye/Appreciation Surprise Party

It's been a long time coming, but it's here now.

Y'alls probably wondering why it took so long to make this post when I specifically said I would soon after my surprise goodbye/appreciation party. Or not. Truth is, I sat down to gather my thoughts and organize it into a blog post, but knew that I would not be able to adequately put in to words how thankful I am. I was setting myself up for failure and as a result subconsciously avoided it. But over the hustle and bustle of Isaac's surprise birthday party (HAPPY BIRTHDAY, I. Chang!) and fuss that ensued after his short and sweet speech, I quickly learned that it's not what you say that tells everyone how thankful you are or how much you appreciate their time, but more... how you say it? I don't know -- I'm still piecing things together myself.

I'm in Davis as I type this up whilst listening to Hey Champ's Cold Dust Girl so I guess it was much less "goodbye" and much more "appreciation" than expected. But hey, you ain't complaining... are you? :) Thank God for Childrens Ministry. :P Honestly, this transition from college to "real world" and the burden I place on myself to succeed during this recession and economic downtime has took a toll on me. Doubled that with no direction (I don't really know what I want to do yet!!!), I can't help but use CM to stall myself from what I believe is guaranteed defeat. But this reminds me of a talk I had with my dad... I can measure success in terms of money or assets, but some of the richest people in life have none of that. Cliche, I know... but it's cliche for a reason! Having even one or two REALLY good friends where money is no object and you do things for that person with no intention of getting anything back is a rarity. Having amazing and loving people in your life to call your FRIENDS is true success!!! Not many people can say they do. But by looking at the people who came to support and encourage me through their words and cards/gifts (not all were pictured), I can confidently say success isn't something I have to worry about, because it kind of looks like I already did. :) Thanks guys! I love you.

I'm going to start using my tumblr more. No blog posts, solely to share whatever the hell I want. Pictures that spark interest, songs that I got on repeat, quotes that inspire, funny conversations, fascinating videos, etc. Just about anything that doesn't deserve a whole blog post to itself.

BTW, for those who have multiple blogs they follow, I HIGHLY recommend Google Reader. Makes life easier and notifies you whenever your favorite blogs update... without the hassle of having to visit each page indiviually! HOLLA! http://www.google.com/reader
